5:35 – 6:35pm : (AM3) Panel Discussion: The Make-or-Break Milestones Toward Level 4 Autonomous Driving

Over the next decade, autonomous driving technology is expected to progress from SAE Level 3 to Level 4, with limited deployments of fully autonomous Level 5 systems. However, the transition from one level of automation to another involves overcoming considerable technical and regulatory challenges. How can AVs demonstrate safety in rare, high-risk edge cases that humans instinctively handle? Are current sensing solutions reliable enough? How can redundancy and fault tolerance be maintained to meet ASIL-D safety standards? Will it be possible to do a software update for a 10- to 15-year-old CPU? Can software and hardware evolve together? Are we transitioning from software-defined to AI-defined vehicles? Is end-to-end AI the future of autonomous driving? Does testing a Level 4 vehicle in one city allow it to be deployed in other cities? What standards need to be enforced to ensure trust? This panel session will review recent advances in autonomous driving, as well as high-risk areas, and propose a technological roadmap towards Level 4.

Pierrick Boulay is Principal Analyst, Automotive Semiconductors at Yole Group.
He works in the fields of solid-state lighting and lighting systems, carrying out technical, economic, and marketing analyses. In addition, he leads the automotive activities within the company.
Pierrick has authored several reports and custom analyses on topics such as automotive lighting, LiDAR, sensing for ADAS vehicles, and VCSELs.
Prior to Yole Group, Pierrick has worked in several companies where he developed his knowledge of lighting and automotive. In the past, he has primarily worked in R&D departments on LED lighting applications.
Pierrick holds a master of science in electronics at ESEO (Angers, France)
