ABSTRACT:
Optical metasurfaces have been emerging for several years with the promise of enabling new possibilities in optoelectronic modules. Among these, diffractive gratings are set to play a key role in augmented reality glasses, which require slim form-factor components with great scalability potential in manufacturing. In imaging, metasurfaces have recently been integrated into 3D sensing modules, replacing traditional refractive lenses, allowing for smaller and simpler designs. This innovative technology is also attracting the interest of the CMOS image sensor industry, where metasurfaces could enhance imager performance and enabling new sensing modalities such as polarization. However, to unlock these promising opportunities, metasurface technologies must overcome several technical challenges, including specific requirements in design, material, and process engineering. This has spurred a flourishing ecosystem of start-ups demonstrating new concepts and creating synergies with established supply chains. What market opportunities exist for metasurfaces?
