E.ON awarded as global leader in quantum technology within the energy sector

  • Global ranking in the Quantum Innovation Index confirms E.ON’s pioneering role in the use of this future-oriented technology within the energy sector
  • Progress based on strong partnerships and concrete application projects
  • Consistent digitalization and innovative strength as the foundation for a sustainable and resilient energy supply of the future

E.ON has secured the top position in the current Quantum Innovation Index for the energy sector, placing it among the world’s top ten companies in this field. The award underscores E.ON’s pioneering role in the introduction and development of quantum computing in an industry facing increasingly complex challenges as a result of the energy transition.

Quantum computing as a key technology for a sustainable energy future

The transformation of the energy system, in which millions of decentralised assets across Europe interact continuously, is increasingly pushing conventional computing to its limits. Quantum computing makes it possible to efficiently analyse and optimise complex systems. As one of Europe’s largest energy suppliers, E.ON has deliberately invested in quantum computing to tackle complex tasks such as optimising digital grids, forecasting renewable energy generation, and managing risks in the energy market. Through ongoing research into the modelling and control of highly dynamic and decentralised energy systems, quantum computing is opening new avenues for planning and operating tomorrow’s grid infrastructures.

Victoria Ossadnik, Member of the Board of Management of E.ON for Digital & Innovation, explains: “E.ON is using its innovative strength to ensure that energy remains reliably available and affordable in the future. We view quantum computing as an essential building block that will also strengthen our competitiveness. Achieving an internationally position is a confirmation that we have chosen the right path.”

Concrete applications and strong partnerships

Current innovation projects include hybrid quantum-classical optimisations for decentralised energy networks, the use of quantum algorithms for weather pattern analysis as well as solutions for controlling vehicle-to-grid systems. More than 20 scientific publications, five patent applications and participation in European initiatives such as the Quantum Industry Consortium (QuIC) underscore E.ON’s active role in applying quantum technology.

A team of quantum scientists at E.ON collaborates with global technology partners such as IBM and D-Wave Quantum Inc. as well as universities and research institutes, including TU Munich, DLR Quantum Computing Initiative, DLR Space Operations and Astronaut Training, the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS, the E.ON Energy Research Center at RWTH Aachen, Eindhoven University of Technology, STFC Hartree Centre, and the University of Oxford.

About the Quantum Innovation Index

With the Quantum Innovation Index, The Quantum Insider and HorizonX Consulting have, for the first time, created a cross-industry comparison of the quantum readiness of companies. The evaluation criteria included, among others, innovative strength, the stage of technology adoption, and workforce competencies in quantum computing. In the energy sector, E.ON secured first place.
