Destination charging is happening more and more frequently

In the early stage when EV was rare and only capable of commuting between home and workplace due to small storage capacity of EV battery, more than 83% of EV owners (National Idaho Laboratory data) charge their vehicle at home only.

But private EV sales has seen exponential growth in major markets including East Asia, Europe and North America in recent years. And as the storage capacity of EV battery mounts, EV owners are more assured of taking longer trips away from home and workplace.

One of the resultant observations is that charging at destinations like hotels, offices, restaurants, car parks, shopping malls and anywhere where a car is parked for a mid to a long time, takes place more and more frequently. This type of charging is called “destination charging”.

Destination charging advantages

Destination charging is embedded with advantages:

l It is convenient for the EV driver as the charging is being done transparently while they are away.

l It is a reliable solution for “road anxiety”. EV drivers are assured they can charge at their destination and make their way home.

l Long queuing for fast charging at a service station can be prevented.

l Overload on the electricity grid won’t happen as EVs charge in this case at a slower pace.

20kW DC charger is the solution for destination charging

As mentioned before, the storage capacity of EV battery has been mounting. And it takes more than 8 hours to fully charge a normal EV with 70kWh capacity if you charge the vehicle with AC charger of 7kW output power. So AC charging is enough for overnight charging. But as EV drivers spend some time on the destination location, the vehicle can only be charged for a few hours. Its way too slow! We need higher power charger.

On the contrary, (ultra) fast chargers, which have an output power greater than 60kW, is not necessarily required in the case of destination charging. To better illustrate, consider the case of shopping mall destination charging. With (ultra) fast chargers, a normal EV can be fully charged in about an hour. But usually, the owner is not able to pick up the car in time and the charging pile will be occupied in vain. What’s more, when too many EVs charge at the same place and at the same time, the electricity grid may be overloaded.

To meet the destination charging, the mainstream solution is to deploy 20kW DC charger on the sites.  With the deployment, the problems of low charging speed and efficiency with AC charger will be fixed, and the grid overload problem with (ultra) fast charger won’t happen, either. The charging speed of 20kW DC charging is faster than that of AC charging, and the cost is lower than that of (ultra) fast charging piles.

Wide output voltage range

With an output voltage range of 200V ~ 1000V, the module supports a constant output power of 20kW in the output voltage range of 300V ~ 1000V. So it is compatible with the charging needs of different categories of EV.

Long life

It has a protection level of IP65 with a structure design of separated components and air duct. The module is perfectly dust-proofed and water-proofed free of maintenance. The design lifespan of the module reaches 10 years, and more than 5 years of warranty is provided.

Low noise

The module adopts low-noise engineering design. The noise is ≤60dB at full load, and ≤55dB in silent mode, which effectively reduces noise disturbance and improves the applicability of charging piles in different scenarios.

High efficiency

It adopts high-quality power and magnetic components, three-phase VIENNA topology, and two sets of interleaved two-level full-bridge topology circuit topology. The peak efficiency reaches > 96.5%. 

Intelligent

It adopts DSP digital control and supports intelligent operation. When the whole pile has input over/undervoltage, output overvoltage, overcurrent, overtemperature, or output short circuit, it spontaneously makes alarm and activates protection mechanism to prevent people from danger and vehicles from damage. It also supports OTA upgrade.

Easy to integrate

The integrated and customized module structure design is adopted to solve the difficulties in the design of the whole pile, save R&D resources for customers, shorten the R&D and production cycle of the whole pile, help customers focus on market demand, and quickly expand domestic and foreign markets.
