YG PRESS NEWS – The RF GaN industry is poised to surpass US$2 billion by 2029

RF GaN-on-Si is making its way into the 5G telecom infrastructure market, with defense and Satcom also driving the growth of RF GaN.

  • The RF GaN market is expected to gradually regain momentum in 2024, projecting it to surpass US$2.1 billion by 2029.
  • Defense and telecom infrastructure drive momentum in the GaN-on-SiC market, creating new opportunities for GaN-on-Si technology
  • MACOM’s acquisitions of OMMIC and Wolfspeed’s RF business bolster its market presence and reshape the RF GaN industry, positioning Wolfspeed as a key supplier of SiC wafers and GaN-on-SiC epiwafers, impacting the open epiwafer market.

According to Yole Intelligence, part of Yole Group, in the RF GaN Compound Semiconductor Market Monitor Q2 2024, for many years, Radio Frequency (RF) GaN has been utilized in 4G base stations due to its superior performance in power amplifiers. Concurrently, defense applications have consistently driven demand for RF GaN-on-SiC in military radar and electronic warfare systems. The 2021 downturn in the RF GaN market, triggered by the US ban on Huawei, the impact of COVID-19, and a slowdown in base station deployment, was reversed in 2022. Manufacturers responded by accelerating GaN adoption to meet the renewed demand from 5G deployment. The recent introduction of GaN-on-Si to telecom infrastructure is set to significantly impact the industry from 2023 onward, potentially creating new market opportunities. This monitor tracks companies like SEDI, Wolfspeed’s RF business (now MACOM), Qorvo, and NXP at the device level, and Wolfspeed, IQE, Coherent, and SICC at the wafer and epiwafer levels. With the RF GaN market undergoing changes and facing challenges, how is the industry evolving and reshaping itself?… For more information about this analysis, please contact us!
