Camera module entering a new era of diversified growth towards 8.6 billion units in 2030
In 2024, the global compact camera module (CCM) market rebounded after two years of decline, reaching 7.0 billion units (+6.9% YoY), driven by smartphone recovery, China’s economic rebound, and rising automotive demand. Mobile and consumer products accounted for 96% of shipments, while automotive grew amid ADAS adoption and more cameras per vehicle. Other sectors contributing to higher camera demand are the further emergence of XR headsets in consumer field, and growth in robotics applications either in consumer or industrial markets. By 2030, volumes should reach 8.6 billion units (3.9% CAGR). Image sensors represent > 50% of value. Technological trends include higher resolutions, 28/22 nm logic, OIS/autofocus expansion, and more complex module architectures. 3D modules contribution will rise to 18% by 2030. The industry enters a stable, innovation-driven phase led by mobile and automotive imaging, with medical and smart-consumer growth diversifying the market.
Verticalization becomes the answer to industry giants’ dominance
From 2022–2025, major CCM players: LG Innotek, Samsung (Semco), AAC, and Sunny Optical, deepened vertical integration across optics, actuators, and assembly, while others like Ofilm, Q Tech, and LCE followed via acquisitions or factory capacity expansions. Over $8B has been invested in new production in Vietnam, Mexico, and India to support smartphone, consumer and automotive growth. After two weak years, the CCM market rebounded in 2024, driven by smartphone recovery, new periscope designs, and reached $38.8 B in 2024, led by LG Innotek, Sunny Optical, and Foxconn, with Chinese firms pushing low-cost automotive modules. CIS demand revived, with Sony nearing 50 % share and Smartsens doubling its revenues, while Samsung advanced new architectures. The optics market stabilized at $5.5 B, with Largan, GSEO, and AAC leading high-end lenses. The actuator market grew to $2.9 B, with Jahwa being a new leader, as MEMS and SMA actuators entered commercialization.
Multi-stacked CIS, metasurfaces, smart actuation: the future of camera modules
From 2022, amid consumer stagnation, imaging leaders focused on higher-value camera modules while navigating patent constraints and competition Jahwa and Semco advanced ball-guide actuators, key for periscope zooms now adopted by Apple and others. Periscope module shipments are set to grow from 85M (2024) to 160M (2030). In CMOS image sensors, multi-stack architectures (Sony, Omnivision, Samsung…) enable higher SNR, on-sensor AI, and 22 nm logic integration has become a standard found in multiple commercial products. Emerging SPAD, and neuromorphic sensors target low-light and smart-detection markets. Optics evolve through hybrid glass-plastic and metasurface integration, with metalenses and liquid lenses having achieved maturity. SMA and MEMS actuators enhance precision and efficiency in mobile, XR, and automotive uses. Automotive imaging advances rapidly, with up to 8 MP HDR sensors, RCCB filters, hybrid lenses, and self-cleaning designs paving the way for higher autonomy levels.
