The 2024-year unrest strained supply chains; many sectors grew, but lasers fell 6% as ASPs for DPSSL/semiconductor/fiber lasers plunged. AI-driven semiconductor and datacom demand boosted diode/VCSELs, while industry sales reduced.
Leading datacom suppliers converted the AI infrastructure boom into strong volumes of 400G and 800G transceivers—accelerating the pull for diode lasers and VCSELs. Across Asia, and particularly in China, a new cohort of transceiver specialists emerged, and several incumbent laser companies pivoted away from legacy industrial exposure toward optical interconnects.
Semiconductor and datacom momentum favored diode lasers and VCSELs. For industrial processing, fiber lasers and DPSSLs benefited from renewed demand in PCB, polymer, glass/ceramic and semiconductor-related workflows, even as pricing pressure diluted the revenue uplift. Meanwhile, high-power fiber lasers remained strategically important in cutting and welding—particularly for battery manufacturing and heavy fabrication.
