LiDAR automotive applications continue to grow
The LiDAR market for automotive and industrial applications is expected to reach $6.3B in 2027 from $2.1B in 2021, with a 22% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2022 - 2027. The automotive application will be the major driver for this growth. The automotive LiDAR market for 2027 is expected to reach $2.0B, from $38M in 2021. A total of 55 design wins have been announced since 2018. Robotic car applications will also drive the LiDAR market, with an expected value of $698M in 2027, from $120M in 2021.
LiDAR growth will not be limited to automotive applications. Various projects for smart infrastructure are going on, including for intersection monitoring and security. The LiDAR market for smart infrastructure will reach $1.1B in 2027, from $108M in 2021. Furthermore, the automation of the logistic chain is also pulling the LiDAR market. The logistic LiDAR market will reach $344M in 2027, from $92M in 2021.
This comprehensive report covers market volume and value for applications in the automotive and industrial markets, including several technology splits.
The future of LiDAR technologies
The LiDAR landscape is characterized by various technologies, both for ranging and imaging. Different optical wavelengths are also used, included both in the near infrared (NIR) and the short-wave infrared (SWIR). However, in the future, LiDAR will surely focus on a few technologies, with the remaining ones being restricted to niche applications.
Semiconductors will play an important role in this process. Similar to Moore’s law, semiconductor light emitters and photodetectors double their performance every two years. A new wave of LiDAR technology is expected to rise in the coming 5 - 10 years, including flash LiDAR that relies solely on semiconductor devices.
This report presents a complete analysis of LiDAR technologies used for ranging and imaging, automotive integration, and components used for light emission and photodetection.
The rise of the Chinese LiDAR ecosystem
Today’s LiDAR landscape for automotive and industrial applications is dominated by large corporations dedicated to topography and factory applications. These include Trimble (USA), Hexagon AB (Sweden), Sick AG (Germany), and Topcon (Japan).
New LiDAR applications in industrial and automotive applications have seen the rise of new players, including from China. Of the 55 design wins for automotive announced since 2018, half are from China and include the following LiDAR manufacturers: Hesai, RoboSense, Huawei, and Livox. China has not only developed high-quality LiDAR technology and LiDAR factories, but also a complete ecosystem including semiconductor components, software, and integrators.
This report presents the LiDAR ecosystem and market share for the numerous automotive and industrial LiDAR applications.
