Magnetic Sensors: A $4.3B market fueled by automotive, industrial, and consumer Iinovation
Magnetic sensors are used for sensing the Earth’s magnetic field, detecting proximity or position, and measuring current. The market reached $3.3B in 2025 and is expected to grow to $4.3B by 2031, with a 4.5% CAGR, driven by the Automotive &Mobility, Industrial, and Consumer sectors.
Automotive: Electrification is the main driver, with the development of 800V batteries and fast DC chargingarchitectures. Magnetic current sensors tend to replace shunts, while bidirectional charging creates opportunities forleak detection and safety. The transition toward “computers on wheels” is also increasing the number of position andpresence sensors.
- Consumer: Position sensors dominate, especially for Optical Image Stabilization and eCompass in smartphones andwearables. The rise of AI-enabled devices is also supporting magnetic sensors due to their small size and low powerconsumption.
- Industrial : This market growth is driven by electric vehicles, data centers, and robotics. Magnetic current sensors supportsmart grids and power management, while position sensors are well suited for humanoids and robots due to theircompact size and efficiency.
- Medical : Stable market, mainly driven by Continuous Glucose Monitoring systems. These applications can use TMRtechnology for power switching, with several players already active in this space.
Competitive landscape of Magnetic Sensors: key players and strategic moves
The magnetic sensing industry is fragmented, with many players targeting different markets, applications, andtechnologies. The top players in volume are TDK, AKM, Allegro Microsystems, Novosense, and Infineon, while GreaterChinese companies are increasingly active.
- Automotive: Allegro Microsystems leads thanks to its strong legacy and broad portfolio. Infineon follows with its positionsensing expertise, and Melexis ranks third with strength in position sensors, switches and latches.
- Consumer: TDK and AKM dominate. AKM leads in eCompass and Hall sensors for OIS, while TDK leads in volume withTMR technology for OIS. MEMSIC ranks third with AMR-based eCompass, and Novosense follows with Hall sensors forOIS, gaming, and home appliances.
- Medical: key players include Isentek, Multidimension, and Littelfuse, mainly for power switches in CGM systems. TEConnectivity remains active in position sensors for drug pumps using AMR technology.
Around TMR technology, several players aim to expand their business. TDK and LEM collaborate on this technology, whilecompanies like Eutronsense supply wafers with xMR film stacks for sensor manufacturing.
Recent ecosystem changes (2025–early 2026) include STMicroelectronics acquiring NXP’s MEMS business and Infineonacquiring ams OSRAM’s non-optical sensor business. These moves show a trend toward focus on core expertise to bettermeet market demand.
Magnetic Sensor technologies: performance, integration, and Emerging trends
In the magnetic sensing industry, the Hall affect and the xMR technologies are used in several applications to senseposition (angular or linear), act as switches and latches, sense the Earth’s magnetic field or sense current. Thanks tosemiconductor processes, the chips have been miniaturized
The improvement has been so great that Hall and xMR technologies have replaced in some cases conventionaltechnologies and can be in competition with shunts, inductive sensors, in applications in Automotive & Mobility,Consumer, Medical and Industrial markets.
Several magnetic sensor players (Allegro Microsystems, TDK …) are still investing to develop TMR-based sensors. Thechip’s sensitivity, large bandwidth, and ultra-low footprint make it a suitable candidate for several applications in currentsensing, but the performances can be limited for some of them.
Depending on the application and on the strategy of the player, the integration of the sensing elements and theintegration into the package can be different. For the resolver replacement, TMR is still a good candidate, but severalchallenges are still existing, like the isolation from stray fields.
While TMR technology is based on a very complex thin-film deposition process that is hard to master, other players likeMatrixsens or AKM are still working to improve the Hall effect technology, with InSb or InAs quantum well materials. These technologies are more expensive but offer better sensitivity and can be real competitors for TMR technology forOIS application in the Consumer market, for example.
