AI is reshaping priorities and creating new demand profiles in power electronics. Power consumption is accelerating far faster than infrastructure modernization, turning the grid into a bottleneck for both AI deployment and DC fast charging expansion. In this landscape, power availability becomes the key enabler for upcoming projects. Battery energy storage is growing quickly to stabilize the grid and absorb renewable overproduction, while DC charging is scaling toward megawatt-class systems. Data centers capture top attention, positioned as strategic assets by governments and as essential infrastructure for the digital economy. HVDC, is increasingly attracting private capital to answer long-distance transmission needs. At the same time, the xEV segment is entering a more cautious phase with a stronger focus on hybrids, UPS markets are consolidating around large-scale installations, and solar continues to benefit from falling module and battery prices in regions moving away from diesel backup. Wind growth remains modest but supported by offshore projects, while rail and industrial drives reflect the maturity of their installed bases.AI is building a new ecosystem & partnerships
China has established dominance in power electronics by combining battery control, high-volume modular manufacturing, strong passive component know-how, and rapid OEM agility, securing top-three positions across PV and PSU for data centers. Companies like Huawei, Sungrow and BYD are expanding horizontally and globally. On the other hand, AI is reshaping supply chain and creating a new ecosystem. Recent partnerships between Nvidia and most of power converters leader such as Delta, Schneider, Vertiv, LiteOn have marked the landscape in 2025. A new DC distribution ecosystem is being built to response to the rising demand of DC native sources and loads, DC circuit breaker, DC current sensors, fault detection and coordination, standard and qualified people. Consolidated companies are supposed to grab the biggest share on this, but there is still windows opportunity for start-ups and small companies to develop and invest heavily in one specific topic such as solid-state transformer (SST).
Back to DC is redefining the power electronics
The so-called 1-MW rack is considered very challenging, even ambitious. Nvidia has set the barrier high by requiring a ready architecture by the end of next year. The debate remains open on the optimal DC voltage, 400 V or 750 V, resembling a chicken-and-egg situation that may take time to resolve before Nvidia’s deadline. We identified three emerging topics driven by all applications combined but boosted by the AI infrastructure are:The growing need for DC distribution to supply the native DC loads/sources (AI servers, EVs, PV + BESS, industrial motors, offshore wind)
Solid-State Transformer (SST) to replace conventional transformer, offering size, weight, and efficiency advantages.
The solid-state DC circuit breaker for high current level.
High voltage and WBG devices are increasingly involved in power converters to save OpEx by improving the efficiency and saving energy to cool down.
