Meanwhile, satellite connectivity in smartphones is evolving from emergency messaging toward Direct-to-Cell services, increasing RF content per device and pushing the satellite-enabled smartphone RF market toward $1B by the end of the decade.
Vertical integration and cost engineering reshape the ecosystem
In smartphones, satellite RF chipsets are supplied by a limited number of vendors, integrating L-band PAs, RF switches, GNSS, and filtering. As Direct-to-Cell services expand, partnerships between satellite operators and mobile network operators will reshape the supply chain.
Satellite manufacturing and launch economics have been fundamentally transformed by reusable rockets, mass production, and increasing vertical integration. Falling launch costs per kilogram are reshaping constellation economics and enabling large-scale LEO deployments. The industry is shifting from traditional satellite integrators toward vertically integrated constellation operators, with Starlink leading the model by designing satellites, user terminals, RF components, and launch systems in-house to optimize performance and cost.

Cost pressure in consumer broadband terminals is pushing RF suppliers toward higher integration and smaller form factors, leveraging technologies such as SiGe BiCMOS, RF-SOI, and FD-SOI. STMicroelectronics remains a key player in Satcom RF devices, alongside companies such as Skyworks, Qorvo, and Broadcom.
RF front-end innovation enables scalable LEO connectivity
RF front-end devices are a key enabler of LEO satellite connectivity, supporting efficient transmission, reception and beam steering in both user terminals and satellites. Most LEO terminals rely on flat-panel Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) architectures, allowing dynamic beam steering without mechanical movement and enabling reliable tracking of fast-moving satellites.
These antennas integrate large numbers of Front-End Modules (FEMs) and Beamformer ICs (BFICs) to perform digital or hybrid beamforming. SiGe Bi-CMOS remains widely used for beamformer ICs due to its RF performance and integration capabilities, while FD-SOI and RF-SOI technologies are increasingly adopted for cost-efficient integration.
Successive generations of Starlink terminals illustrate rapid RF architecture optimization, significantly reducing the number of RF components per terminal while improving performance and lowering cost.
In satellite-enabled smartphones, current solutions rely on dedicated chipsets enabling messaging and limited voice services. The RF front-end typically integrates GaAs L-band power amplifiers, RF-SOI switches, LNAs, and BAW/SAW filtering. The next evolution is Direct-to-Cell connectivity, enabling standard smartphones to connect directly to LEO satellites and significantly expanding the addressable market.
