Following a turbulent 2024-2025 period, the power device market is projected to grow with a CAGR25-31 of 7.1%
During the 2024–2025 period, the power electronics market and supply chain faced numerous challenges:
- Increasing geopolitical instability, as well as trade and military conflicts.
- A significant expansion of manufacturing capacity alongside lower-than-expected xEV demand, particularly impacting the SiC wafer and device markets.
- The rise of Chinese manufacturers benefiting from strong domestic demand for power devices, as China leads several power electronics segments, including xEVs, photovoltaics, wind energy, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
- Intense cost pressure across most power electronics application markets.
After the excitement and expansion phase prior to 2025, the power electronics industry is returning to business fundamentals, with a strong focus on rapid ramp-up of newly built fabs, yield optimization on large-diameter wafers, “front-runner” products rather than breakthrough innovations, customer acquisition, sales execution, and management of increasing competition and cost pressure.
The global power electronics market is expected to continue growing steadily. According to projections by Yole Group, the market will surpass $41B by 2031, driven by sectors such as electric mobility, industrial motor drives, photovoltaics, BESS, power supplies for data centers (especially AI-related applications), EV DC chargers, as well as rail and HVDC projects.
Power discrete devices will continue to dominate the market, although the share of power modules is growing rapidly. The Automotive & Mobility sector will remain the largest market segment.
Silicon device demand will continue to be driven by demand for mature technologies, low cost, and high reliability. SiC power modules and discrete devices, along with GaN-based devices, will continue to grow, driven by the demand for higher efficiency and greater system power density. xEVs remain the largest market segment for SiC devices, while GaN continues to be driven mainly by consumer electronics, although its adoption is also increasing in higher-power and higher-voltage systems, such as power supply units (PSUs) for AI data centers.
Power device market still dominated by European, US, and Japanese players; Chinese suppliers rapidly rising
The power electronics industry is transitioning from expansion toward consolidation and cost optimization. SiC overcapacity and aggressive competition from Chinese players are reshaping the ecosystem. Vertical integration is becoming a strategic differentiator, especially in SiC and increasingly in GaN. Competitive advantage increasingly depends on manufacturing scale, cost optimization, packaging know-how, as well as supply-chain resilience and ecosystem partnerships.
Wafers
The silicon wafer supply chain remains dominated by a small number of Japanese, Taiwanese, and Chinese players, including SUMCO (JP), Shin-Etsu Handotai (JP), GlobalWafers (TW), and Wafer Works (TW), among others. Siltronic (DE) remains the only major European silicon wafer supplier.
Power devices
Infineon remains the global leader in power semiconductor devices, with broad Si, SiC, and GaN portfolios. STMicroelectronics, onsemi, Mitsubishi Electric, Fuji Electric, ROHM, and Toshiba are other major power-device suppliers.
Chinese players are rapidly gaining market share in SiC wafers, discrete devices, EV-related power electronics, and industrial power modules. Companies such as CR Micro, Silan, BYD, and CRRC are among the Top 20 power device manufacturers in 2025. The rise of Chinese players is driven, among other factors, by the country’s huge domestic market for power devices.
Geographic positioning of the ecosystem
Japan remains strong in materials, packaging, reliability, and industrial power electronics. Europe focuses on automotive, industrial, renewable energy, and high-reliability systems. The USA prioritizes AI infrastructure, data centers, and high-performance applications. China dominates electrification scale, manufacturing capacity, and domestic deployment. Asia continues strengthening its role as a global packaging and OSAT hub.
“China +1” and regionalization strategies are reshaping manufacturing footprints worldwide.
Focus on “front-runner” products, customer acquisition and sales execution rather than the latest technology innovations.
Global power electronics technology trends
Power electronics industry is entering a consolidation phase after years of rapid expansion, with a focus on “front-runner” products, customer acquisition and sales execution rather than the latest technology innovations.
SiC and GaN devices are progressively increasing their market shares, together reaching 31% of power device market value by 2031.
Electrification, renewable energy, AI/data centers, and automation are the main long-term growth drivers for power electronics devices and technology innovations. System voltages continue increasing: 400 Và 800 V in xEVs, 1,000 V à 1,500 V in photovoltaics, 500V à 1,000 V in EV DC chargers, transition to 800V in AI data center architectures, etc. Transition to manufacturing on larger diameter wafers.
Silicon MOSFETs and IGBTs continue to dominate mainstream applications thanks to their cost, maturity, reliability, and broad ecosystem.
SiC is moving from expansion to consolidation
SiC adoption is driven mainly by 800 V BEV traction inverters and high-efficiency power conversion. Market slowdown in BEVs has created SiC overcapacity and strong price pressure across the supply chain. SiC price erosion is accelerated by SiC wafers and devices cost reduction and by price pressure from Chinese system manufacturers. Focus is shifting toward higher-value applications: data centers, BESS, heavy mobility, defense, and very-high-voltage systems and on the transition from 6” to 8” wafers.
GaN strengthens position in low- to mid-power systems
GaN adoption remains strongest in consumer power supplies, fast chargers for consumer electronics, data centers, and compact high-frequency converters. Automotive and high-power applications adoption remain limited by reliability concerns, ecosystem maturity, and availability of high-voltage devices.
Packaging becomes a key differentiator
Innovation focus is shifting from device architecture toward thermal management and advanced packaging. Key device packaging trends include: top-side and double-side cooling, copper clip interconnects, silver sintering, low-inductance module layouts and embedded die packaging. How to dissipate the heat out of the chip has become crucial.
Environmentally-friendly solutions sought
Clean mining of raw materials, zero-carbon energy generation, clean mobility, energy recovery, higher power conversion efficiency and lower environmental footprint are sought.
