This shift was driven by the need for high computing power, particularly in servers, to run Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. The GPU market will face growing competition from AI ASICs developed by hyperscalers like Google and AWS, which are expected to grow rapidly over the next five years, primarily aimed at reducing today’s massive CAPEX costs. Behind the server processor market, edge AI is rapidly expanding in APUs and consumer CPUs. The goal is clear: to develop native AI in all electronic devices to deliver the best possible user experience. Smartphones and laptops are at the forefront of this embedded AI development, but new types of devices could also emerge.

New players are also emerging from China in already highly competitive markets, with some success such as Xiaomi in smartphone APUs and Nio in automotive ADAS APUs. The multiplicity of players in the APU market can be explained by the wide diversity of targeted end markets. While the GPU market primarily focuses on servers, desktops, and workstations, the APU market addresses smartphones, laptops, smartwatches, smart speakers, smart TVs, automotive, virtual reality, and many other segments detailed in this report, often with well-established leaders in each market.
Design leadership and foundry access define the future of the processor industry
To capture the market, processor players share a common goal of offering the most powerful solution ahead of their competitors. To achieve this, each market faces its own challenges, whether in terms of cost or physical and technological limitations. A shared trend across all segments is the year-over-year push toward more advanced technology nodes, which were once limited to smartphone APUs but are now gradually being adopted by server CPUs and the others.
