Ciena extends its reach inside the data center with Nubis acquisition

By adding ultra-efficient optical engines and linear redrivers to its chip-and-optics toolkit, Ciena advances toward faster, lower-power interconnects for AI-driven data centers, without becoming entangled in switch-ASIC battles.

Ciena expands its presence in data centers with the acquisition of NubisCiena strengthens its position in the data center sector with the strategic acquisition of Nubis. This transaction marks a new stage in the company’s expansion strategy in the advanced optical infrastructure market. Ciena buying Nubis is a smart way to reach deeper into the data center without getting drawn into the switch-ASIC wars. Nubis adds two major enhancements: ultra-efficient optical engines (no DSP, up to 6.4T full duplex, ~30% lower power/bit at 200G) and linear redrivers that enable active copper to reach ~4 m at 200 Gb/s per lane. Combine that with Ciena’s 448G SerDes and coherent know-how, and you get a clear path to faster, lower-power interconnects beyond 6.4T optical engines.

This deal expands Ciena’s data-center interconnect lineup and gives it new ways into AI clusters where power, latency, and cost per bit really matter. It also deepens Ciena’s chip-and-optics toolkit, including SerDes, converters, lasers, modulators, and photodiodes, while steering clear of direct fights with Broadcom or Marvell on switch ASICs.

Ciena now covers more ground from long-haul coherent links to near-chip optical I/O with an open CPO/NPO plus active-copper strategy. That lowers development risk, fits more customer use cases, and strengthens Ciena’s position in AI-era data centers.
