A solution for high-volume EV/HEV end-of-life batteries is yet to be found.

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in consumer goods, electric and hybrid electric vehicles and stationary energy storage. Rapid growth in the electric vehicle market is crucial to solve the looming climate crisis and to meet the global target of reducing carbon dioxide emissions. However, they pose another environmental challenge. What should be done with the end-of-life batteries that once powered those environmentally-friendly cars? These end-of-life batteries contain valuable raw materials that can be recovered, processed, and reused. However, very few batteries go for recycling today, with the majority going to landfills. Recycling of these end-of-life batteries can provide an opportunity for battery recyclers to recover the valuable materials. This makes battery recycling a sustainable secondary source of key raw materials such as cobalt and nickel, which can then be used again to manufacture new Li-ion batteries.

In this webcast, Yole Développement discussed some of the most promising technologies for Li-ion battery recycling, the benefits as well as challenges associated with it, the latest trends, and the supply chain related to the Li-ion battery recycling industry.
