Set to demand $3.6 billion worth of CMOS Image Sensors in 2027, dominated by Chinese camera players, and with edge computing emerging, security imaging is changing drastically.

CMOS image sensor (CIS) revenue for security applications is growing rapidly, by 32.5% from 2020 to 2021.

In the last five years, the security part of the total CIS market has almost doubled, from 6% to 11%. Security has become the second largest market segment after mobile devices. From 2021 to 2027, revenue is expected to increase from $2.16 billion to $3.67 billion, at an 8.9% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), with 735 million units shipped. Omnivision is confirmed as the most important sensor supplier for security. It is followed by Smartsens, Galaxycore, SK Hynix, SOInc, Samsung, Sony, OnSemi, Canon, Panasonic, Pixart, Himax.

At the end-system level, the top five camera suppliers have remained unchanged for the last two years.

At camera level, Hikvision and Dahua represent about half the market value, showing little impact of the US ban on their overall business. In the US, Motorola is strengthening its position through multiple recent acquisitions. The European players Bosch and Axis are maintaining their leading positions, particularly in the fields of infrastructure and smart building surveillance. The Chinese ecosystem is strengthening. It already has the main CIS leaders, camera manufacturers giants, and significant processing capabilities. Hardware suppliers are increasingly partnering with software providers. In the field of video analytics, significant funds are being raised, for example for autonomous checkout applications.

The emergence of edge computing is key for the security industry.

Mainstream resolution ranges between 2 and 5 megapixels, representing 90% of shipments. Low light performance is the most crucial performance parameter. Near infrared (IR) and high dynamic range capabilities also remain key factors. Red/green/blue (RGB)-IR sensors are emerging in low light or access control solutions. Global shutter sensors are likewise entering higher-end and traffic monitoring. In addition, Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) imaging will bring superior low light performance. Furthermore, new technologies such as event-based and quantum-dot sensors are coming onto the scene. The increased penetration of multiple-CIS cameras, artificial intelligence (AI), and 3D sensing are increasing the value of the camera products. Security imaging follows the development of 3D sensing, for access control, smart door locks, face payments, people counting and anti-tailgating features. On the processing and computing side, smaller lithographic features are needed to bring sufficient calculation power at reasonable power consumption. Most cameras shipped today are internet protocol (IP) cameras, permitting further processing and computing capabilities that enable analytics, detection, and recognition features in real time. However, one limitation for deploying security cameras is the amount of data and the power needed. Therefore, low power devices, such as always-on sensors, and flexibility in data monitoring are also driving the market. In this context, the development of edge computing solutions in cameras will remain a strong technology trend, allowing the use of metadata.
