Outlook
Improving product mix and increasing selling prices are powering the growth of the mobile & consumer markets
The overall trend is for more expensive mobile & consumer end systems, maintaining revenue growth at a 2.4% CAGR. Semiconductor content will remain stable at ~35% for the mobile and computing subsegments while remaining at ~16% for the consumer subsegment.
The semiconductor device industry has suffered a decline of –10% in 2023, primarily due to a collapse in memory prices and the post-covid sequence of stockpiling and chip shortages. Until 2023, semiconductors for mobile & consumer have hovered in the range of ~60% of the total semiconductor output, making this segment a pillar of the semiconductor industry. This share is expected to reduce toward ~40% by the end of the decade, primarily due to the greater growth in data center infrastructure and automotive semiconductors.
OEMs from the US have improved their commanding position all along the post-covid sequence
In 2023, the strong US dollar helped consumer electronic imports in the United States but is impeding consumption everywhere else.
The global GDP growth pattern has fully recovered from the covid-19 interruption, and the expectation is for a nominal 2.8% CAGR for the next five years.
G7 countries are nonetheless experiencing some extreme levels of inflation, which has constrained disposable incomes and is currently taming demand for mobile & consumer items.
Mainland China now represents about ~20% of the world economy, and Chinese OEMs have captured one-third of the consumer electronics markets.
The combined US and EU economies are now below 50% of the world’s GDP. However, United States OEMs still have ~40% of the consumer electronics market, while European OEMs remain non-significant.
The race for 5G connectivity, device miniaturization and power efficiency
More Moore – Only two players (TSMC and Samsung) provide the most advanced 4nm to 3nm logic nodes, mainly serving Apple and Samsung mobile divisions. Both OEMs combine leading-edge semiconductors with advanced packaging techniques in their latest flagships. Three players (Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron) can deliver the SS-1βnm DRAM, while three (Samsung, Micron, and YMTC) can provide 232-layer 3D NAND.
More than Moore – Power semiconductor technology is all about compound semiconductors, in particular, power GaN for high-speed charging. Analog RF is increasingly adopting 5G technologies such as BAW filters and RF SOI. Photonic and Lighting is also powered by compound semiconductors, and InP and GaAs VCSELs could eventually propel microLEDs to the forefront. Imaging is primarily driven by multi-camera systems in mobile but also by emerging wearable & IoT products. Finally, sensors were at the foundation of the smartphone revolution and will continue to expand in numbers and functionality.
