Infinera, NEC Networks and System Integration upgrade Japanese metro backbone network

Infinera says it has collaborated with local partner NEC Networks and System Integration (NESIC) to upgrade the metro network of an affiliate of Power Nets Japan (PNJ). Infinera did not further identify the regional service provider, who asked for delivery of converged packet and optical transport technology for the metro fiber network upgrade.

The metro network enhancement features the mTera Universal Transport Platform, a metro-focused packet-optical transport platform Infinera added to its portfolio via the Coriant acquisition (see “Infinera closes Coriant acquisition”). The mTera supports software-defined universal switching, including Optical Transport Network (OTN), Carrier Ethernet, Multiprotocol Label Switching-Transport Profile (MPLS-TP), and SONET/SDH. The service provider has the option of adding ROADM blades to the system as well.

Infinera says the mTera will be used for data center interconnect “in one of Japan’s major metropolitan areas.” The systems also will aid in the delivery of local and regional end-user services such as private cloud and internet access. The service provider is already using the Infinera 7100 Packet Optical Transport Platform and Transcend Chorus network management platform in its network, which also are Coriant products.

PNJ formed in 1999 as an alliance of 10 utility-based communications services providers, according to an article in The Japan Times. The article called TTNet, Chubu Telecommunications and Osaka Media Port core members of the group.
