ITRI forms consortium to promote Micro LED

Government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)  formed Consortium for Intelligent Micro-assembly System (CIMS), an interdisciplinary platform for combing industries of display panels, LED, semiconductors and system integration to boost development of Micro LED technology in Taiwan.

General director Wu Chih-i for Electronic and Optoelectronic System Research Laboratories under ITRI acts as the initial president of CIMS and the consortium has more than 20 initial members.

Displays based on Micro LED chips have advantages of power saving, long service life, high brightness, flexibility and slimness, Wu said.

Several large international enterprises, including Apple and Sony, have undertaken R&D of Micro LED and individual Taiwan-based companies are really unable to compete with them, Wu noted. However, individual Taiwan-based companies can be consolidated for competition through combining their capabilities and resources and this is the motivation of forming CIMS, Wu indicated.
