Gas and PM sensors market: $2.8B in 2029?
In recent years, there has been awareness regarding health and the environment. Several air quality monitors have been developed, helping the gas and particle sensor markets grow by 8% and 11% respectively between 2023 and 2029, reaching a total market size of $2.8 billion in 2029. For the digital olfaction, this sector is still led by products sold for research and development projects and services; we expect it to reach $52M in 2029.
First, Industrial is the largest market in terms of revenue for gas sensing, followed by PM sensors. The main driver is the legislation for refrigerant gas leak detection in HVAC and AC systems and ASHRAE for buildings. Then, the Automotive market is the second largest in terms of revenue, thanks to the O2 sensors, NOX sensors, and gas and PM sensors to manage the HVAC system and for thermal runaway detection for EVs. And to finish, Consumer is the next largest market, thanks to the demand for air purifiers. The global increase in energy costs in the last few months – due to geopolitical conflict – brings the emergence of other energy sources like hydrogen. This gas can be used as a primary source for several industries and residential use. We expect the Medical market to remain relatively stable in the next few years. Gas sensors are used in capnography and breath analyzer applications.
Gas and PM sensor ecosystems are still dynamic
The major share of the gas sensing industry is held by Automotive players (Bosch, BorgWarner, and NGK-NTK). If we don’t consider the Automotive O2 and NOX gas sensors, Figaro is the leader. There is still a demand for miniaturization and low power consumption, so players involved in NDIR and MOX technologies are taking more market share. Since COVID-19, gas-sensing players are entering the gas monitoring business. Due to the lack of legislation about these detectors, their performance, and the method to represent data, customers of such devices are confused. This is one reason the Consumer market stayed relatively stable since the pandemic. In gas sensing, the number of products recently released shows that this ecosystem is still dynamic: Sensors with PAS or NDIR technology, or multi-gas sensor based on MOX technology. On the particle sensing side, the market leader is Cubic Sensor. The industry is witnessing a growing number of Chinese companies offering low-cost solutions for consumer applications. The digital olfaction ecosystem is still emerging, and we have noticed some fundraising in the last few years ($64M).
Key trends in gas and PM sensors technologies
There are numerous gas-sensing technologies, from conventional electrochemicals to emerging technologies like PAS. NDIR and MOX technologies are becoming dominant because they target the main gases for people’s safety. They use solid-state technology like MEMS, which is good for miniaturization and low power consumption.Optical Light Scattering is the primary technology used for particle sensing. This technology is now highly mature, with a well-developed industry. But in terms of performance, there are severe disparities between suppliers. For the fan-based optical scattering technology, we should not see significant hardware improvements in the future. But new players are working on interesting technologies. For digital olfaction, several technologies exist: gas chromatography instruments, smaller devices with optical detection, integrable devices with arrays of gas sensors. The advantages are that these technologies can be used where a human ‘sniffer’ cannot, their accuracy, and the availability of the data in real-time over long periods. But on the other hand, the results are often limited by database information, and the cost could be a barrier for some applications.
