Power SiC – Life in The Fast Lane as SiC Penetration Accelerates – Webcast on March 4, 2021 at 5.00 PM CET. This online event is powered by Yole Développement (Yole) and System Plus Consulting and welcomes the SiC leading company, Wolfspeed.
“SiC has emerged as one of the most dynamic technologies in terms of market growth and design opportunities,” asserts Ezgi Dogmus, PhD, Team Lead Analyst in Compound Semiconductor & Emerging Substrates in the Power & Wireless Division at Yole Développement (Yole).
SiC devices were commercially introduced at the start of this century. In those 20 years, they have evolved from being the preserve of high-end markets, to mass market adoption. The technology is gathering momentum as more companies assert an interest in, and develop, SiC devices.
To fully understand the characteristics of SiC and why the ‘young contender’ to silicon has developed into a market worth over $600 million in 2020, the SiC webcast assembles analysts from Yole, System Plus Consulting and one of the most significant companies in SiC, Wolfspeed.
During this online event, Ezgi Dogmus from Yole will explain the market beginnings of SiC and how it has evolved to address the mature and less expensive silicon market. She will recap SiC’s advantages and how its thermal management, power density, and small form factor saw it gain ground as companies invested in developing SiC technology.
SiC’s maturing supply chain and the narrowing cost-performance ratio in comparison to silicon will be reviewed to understand its mass market appeal.
SiC is deployed in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid EVs (HEVs) inverters and charging infrastructures, photovoltaic (PV) inverters, and power supplies by prominent names in the industry as they move to SiC. Today, Infineon, STMicroelectronics, Rohm, Mitsubishi Electric and many other established silicon companies have SiC portfolios.
Ezgi will also look at the automotive market for SiC. The main inverter market is driving the SiC-based EV/HEV market, and the webcast will consider the expected growth in the automotive market and the reasons behind the predicted market revenues of $3 billion by 2025.
One of the most significant announcements in recent years has been Tesla’s adoption of SiC in its main inverter, and every major automotive OEM is working on SiC solutions, from China’s BYD, South Korea’s Hyundai, to European brands Audi, Volkswagen, Daimler and North America’s General Motors.
In this exciting market, one of the largest players is Wolfspeed. It is a vertically integrated SiC company, producing substrates and up to SiC devices with several design wins for automotive OEMS. Wolfspeed’s commitment to SiC extends to production of its own substrate as well as devices and a significant investment in a new, additional manufacturing facility in New York, scheduled to open in 2022.
The SiC webcast is a nice opportunity for Wolfspeed to deliver its expertise and detail its vision of this industry. Wolfspeed’s speaker, Dieter Liesabeth, Director Strategic Business Development Automotive will elaborate on the company’s expertise on SiC substrate and design wins.
“Wolfspeed is tirelessly working to implement an ecosystem around SiC based products for the electronic power industry,” explains Dieter Liesabeth from Wolfspeed. “We are delighted to help create a cleaner planet by enabling efficient renewable energy systems and electrical vehicles with more range and lower consumption to reduce energy waste. I’m looking forward to sharing our view of the future with the audience.”
In addition, examining the technology and cost of SiC, Amine Allouche, Technology and Cost Analyst at System Plus Consulting, will present the SiC device manufacturing challenges and will dive into technology choices of the main SiC manufacturers. In addition to charting the design evolution for SiC, Amine will discuss the SiC device performances compared to Silicon, and will describe the manufacturing process of SiC MOSFETs. A dedicated cost analysis of SiC MOSFETs will also be presented, highlighting their manufacturing cost-drivers.
