Skyworks enables next generation heart defibrillators

Ramping optocoupler solutions for high reliability applications. Skyworks Solutions, an innovator of high performance analog semiconductors connecting people, places and things, announced that its high reliability optocouplers are providing vital connectivity functionality in implantable cardiac defibrillators from a leading medical device provider. Skyworks’ photovoltaic optocouplers establish the critical link between power supply circuits and control electronics.

Skyworks’ family of custom and hermetic optocouplers operate effectively under extreme environmental conditions and serve a diverse set of markets and applications spanning aerospace, defense, medical and industrial. For over 30 years, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) have been protecting patients against dangerously erratic heartbeats. Approximately 650,000 Americans and nearly one million patients worldwide have an ICD or cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D).
