New SK Hynix China fab nears completion

SK Hynix held recently a “topping out” ceremony to celebrate a major milestone of the construction of its new 8-inch wafer fab in Wuxi, China, according to industry sources. The facility is designed for the production of non-memory chips.

SK Hynix will start equipment move-in at its new 8-inch fab in Wuxi later in 2019, said the sources, adding that the facility will specialize in the production of display driver ICs, power management chips and CMOS image sensors with production capacity of 100,000 wafers monthly.

Building the 8-inch fab in Wuxi shows a significant move for SK Hynix, which intends to expand its non-memory foundry business, the sources continued.

SK Hynix in 2017 announced the establishment of SK Hynix System IC, a wholly-owned subsidiary specializing in foundry business. SK Hynix System IC started operations in 2010, according to its website.
