Yole Group Corporate Presentation
Order activity improves as test equipment utilization recovers
It’s been a slow start to the year. Sales of test-related equipment have now been flat for four consecutive quarters and are still running 25% below the peak reached in 2022. However, test equipment utilization rates are on the up and closing in on the level which will trigger additional capital equipment spending.
On the memory side, demand is bouncing back for HBM DRAM as chipmakers actively seek additional capacity. Overall demand for memory test equipment has been volatile in recent quarters. However, there is healthy growth for final test equipment related to memory technology transitions and high-performance memory (DDR5 and HBM).
Continued weakness in smartphones and other consumer electronics is weighing down on overall demand for non-memory test equipment. The high points of Q1-24 and Q2-24 were related to automotive and industrial applications and test handlers with thermal management capability for high-performance computing (HPC).
Lead times are returning to normal levels which means that buyers are in a strong position and can place orders at short notice.
__
Test equipment utilization rates continue to improve in Q1-24, which is in line with normal seasonal patterns but is at a much lower level than expected.
Non-memory chip inventories are running down from the high levels at the beginning of the year to an acceptable range. Underinvestment in test equipment will start to show as the semiconductor industry recovers.
In summary, Q1-24 will improve over Q4-23, and the outlook is for consecutive quarterly growth for the next several quarters as the recovery gets underway. The long-term growth prospects remain healthy. The test equipment market is on track to grow at a compound annual growth rate of mid-single digit, reaching a value of +$12Bn by 2029.
